Statia/Sint Eustatius

Statia is a former Dutch colony in the Caribbean which is now a part of the Caribbean Netherlands and Dutch Overseas region.

It’s probably the least interesting place we encountered in our passage North through the Caribbean towards the US. It has no boating facilities whatsoever and not even a cruise ship terminal. Oranjestad, the island capital city, seems to be a purely industrial and commercial harbor. There are clouds of dust being blown around the town and across from there is the basic and completely unprotected anchorage where we stayed.

I had to dinghy out to shore to reach the Immigration and Customs office and even then, my landfall was stressful and irritating as there’s no dinghy dock around to speak of. Sure enough, I both checked in and out with expectation to sail out the next morning which we definitely did.
