For the next week, we all worked on preparing the boat. We made some minor repairs such as fixing the heating in the front cabin, vacuumed, and spent ample time provisioning. The average Atlantic crossing takes about 17 days, but in order to plan for the worst case scenario, we planned to provision food for about 40 days in total. Using a handy spreadsheet made by Eva, I planned out the meals and snacks. Unfortunat<\/p>\n
ely, the grocery stores in Marina Rubicon were all small and more like convenience stores. So we rented a car and headed to Arrecife to purchase our supplies. Once we returned to the boat, we were faced with the task of trying to fit all the food aboard the boat. Jemm of the Sea II has one small fridge in the galley and a larger fridge and freezer under the seating in the dining area. We worked for a few hours to Tetris fit all the food into the storage space. We vacuum sealed some produce such as tomatoes, bell peppers, melons, bananas, and cucumbers to try and prolong their lifespan during the voyage. It worked for the green bell peppers and melons but ruined our tomatoes within the first week (more on that in the next blog post!).<\/p>\n

Also while waiting for the batteries, Eva and Wojtek tried their hand at scuba diving to visit the famous Museo Atlantico<\/a>, an underwater museum in Lanzarote. The museum contains sculptures that are meant to promote social change and conversation about environmental conservation. It\u2019s covered in marine life and is a common tourist spot. In order to see the museum, you must either have a basic dive certification for 12m+ or take a quick class before the excursion. Eva and Wojtek went to do the class and practiced diving right off a slip near the beach. Wojtek was able to dive in, but Eva had a minor panic attack and couldn\u2019t continue. She will try again at a diving school in NYC and return next year!<\/p>\n
